Roll

Allibert

1993

The idea that guided the design of Roll is slightly ironic: sophisticated marketing research claims that many people experience the anxiety of running out of toilet paper at the worst possible moment.
To solve this uncomfortable situation, the market offers rather sad cabinets, narrow and tall, placed next to the toilet to store spare rolls.
The theme was instead interpreted by overturning the idea that bodily functions are something to be ashamed of and that everything connected to them should be hidden. Roll, on the contrary, is an unapologetic display of its function, four stacked rolls even when empty.
The lowest compartment of the totem acts as the dispenser, when the roll is finished it is replaced by the one below.

Roll was one of my very first projects, developed during the period in which I collaborated with Allibert. An interesting aspect is that it is molded in a single glossy polypropylene monoblock. And that it was designed on a drafting machine.
