Sally, Charlie, Piperita

Flos

2002

The Sally, Charly and Piperita collection was the first project I designed for Flos, inspired by a specific request from the American market, which required wall mounted fixtures complying with strict safety regulations for use in public spaces. The most restrictive rule concerned the projection from the wall, which could not exceed 10 cm. Starting from a light bulb that alone measured 6 cm in diameter, as LEDs did not yet exist, it is clear how challenging this project was.
The solution, very much the result of lateral thinking practices, was simply to take the classic wall sconce with a truncated conical shade typical of North American tradition and compress it. The result was a particularly interesting form that fully complied with the regulations.

The in depth study of the lamp holder body, composed of two die cast aluminum parts, enabled simplified installation operations and the possibility of removing the diffuser without the use of screws.
Three diffuser versions can be mounted on the same lamp holder: Sally with a pressed glass lampshade, Piperita with a bent glass shield and Charlie with an anodized extruded aluminum shield.
